so is this the awful destiny we all are headed for?

June 22, 2011

a moment came over me right before falling asleep last night and it came like clockwork like my wise friend valerie said it likely would – not that she said this exact moment would happen yet she did tell me reading this particular author and this particular book would make a very big impact on my understanding of life – and what i read was the following passage on pages 110 to 111   >”a person in the grip of ego, however, does not recognize suffering as suffering, but will look upon it as the only appropriate response in any given situation. the ego in its blindness is incapable of seeing the suffering it inflicts on itself and on others. unhappiness is an eg0-created mental-emotional disease that has reached epidemic proportions. it is the inner equivalent of the environmental pollution of our planet. negative states such as anger, anxiety, hatred, resentment, discontent, envy, jealousy, [complacency] and so on, are not recognized as negative but as totally justified and are further misperceived not as self-created but as caused by someone else or some external factor. ‘i am holding you as responsible for my pain.’ this is what by implication the ego is saying. the ego cannot distinguish between a situation and its interpretation of and reaction to that situation. you might say ‘what a dreadful day,’ without realizing that the cold, the wind, and the rain or whatever condition you react to are not dreadful. they are as they are. what is dreadful is your reaction, your inner resistance to it, and the emotion that is created by that resistance. in shakespeare’s words, ‘there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.what is more suffering or negativity is often misperceived by the ego as pleasure because up to a point the ego strengthens itself through it. for example, anger or resentment strengthen the ego enormously by increasing the sense of separateness, emphasizing the otherness of others and creating a seemingly unassailable fortress of ‘rightness.’ if you were able to observe the physiological changes that take place inside your body when possessed by such negative states, how they adversely affect the functioning of the heart, the digestive and immune systems, and countless other bodily functions, it would become abundantly clear that such [negative] states are indeed pathological, [and] are forms of suffering and not pleasure.”<   these words from eckhart tolle in ‘a new earth’ to me are the most powerfully clarifying enlightening and profound words i have ever read and understoodi was there in 2008 – in fact recently a life-long best friend told me he couldn’t speak to me for over a year because there was little to nothing he could even recognize in the person he had known me as at that point for 25 years – if i hadn’t had help in coming out of this very bad time of extreme pain and ‘rightness’ i wouldn’t have any way of realizing the truth in this passage from tolle in this writing

i felt compelled to share this here because we all seem to be vulnerable to this life-draining pattern and god forbid i ever become blind to it again – if you feel this might be you or see it in your loved one i can’t encourage you enough to raise your hand in true strength and ask for help or tell your loved one you don’t recognize them as the happy and giving person they have always been and help them ask for help – it comes down to the golden rule in life and in love – choose love no matter how hard it may be. ~rettingerrockfiles/RRF~
